The music
Long considered the poor relation of strings, the viola has regained its reputation, particularly in the 20th century, when composers were seduced by its warm and expressive timbre. Student of Michael Jarrell at the HEM in Geneva, Léo Albisetti conceives Nouvel Élan as a journey of the viola in a multidimensional sound universe. Dating from 2001, the Viola Concerto No. 2 'The Seafarer' by the British composer Sally Beamish is based on an Anglo-Saxon poem evoking nature. Left unfinished at the composer's death, Béla Bartók's Viola Concerto is of a classical and peaceful style. An excellent violist, Paul Hindemith wrote Der Schwanendreher (The Swan Turner on the Spit) for him, based on three old German folk songs. Dark, tragic and tormented, the Viola Concerto dates from Penderecki's neo-tonal period in a language that definitively turns its back on the avant-gardism of his early years.
