The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande announces the release of its latest album. Conducted by Jonathan Nott and featuring Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi, its includes works by Schoenberg, Messiaen and Ravel recorded for PENTATONE during Piemontesi's residence with the OSR during the 2020-21 season.
Although stylistically different, the three works for piano and orchestra that make up this album all share an American heritage. The spirit of jazz in Maurice Ravel's Concerto (1932) reflects the lasting impact of Ravel's visit to the United States in 1928; Schoenberg's Piano Concerto (1942) was premiered in Los Angeles, the composer's city of exile after fleeing Europe; Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques (1956) was inspired by a series of phonographic albums of American birdsong.
