The music
In 1924, Ernest Ansermet travelled to Buenos Aires: Argentinian musicians eager to found a symphony orchestra called the young Swiss conductor and hired him for the season. The programme met an unexpected and considerable success.
Among the audience was Victoria Ocampo, a young woman who had rushed to the concert out of love for Debussy. Multilingual and highly educated, she conversed with the greatest international intellectuals and artists of her time.
The next day, she sent Ansermet an invitation: a simple note that marked the beginning of a correspondence that would last more than forty years.
This correspondence will be staged and accompanied by works chosen from the repertoire that Ansermet conducted in Buenos Aires as a tribute to a great history of friendship, culture and creativity, and to the bonds that Ernest Ansermet and Victoria Ocampo shared with José Luis Borges, Igor Stravinsky and Rabindranath Tagore.
