Written under painful circumstances when Messiaen was a prisoner of war in a camp in Silesia, the Quatuor pour la fin du temps was born out of the fortuitous encounter of four companions in misfortune. Despite hunger and cold, Messiaen found the power to compose between chores, supported by his indestructible faith. It is difficult to imagine the premiere of such a work, performed on 15 January 1941 before 400 people, on poor instruments in the middle of the stalag. Drawing its inspiration from the Revelation of John, this work of hope helped the young composer find his own musical language.
