A light counterpart to his Tragic Overture, the Academic Festival Overture was Brahms’ joyful present to the University of Wrocław, which had awarded him an honorary doctorate. Nothing goes according to form in Beethoven’s superb Piano Concerto No. 4. The soloist’s discreet entrance ushers in the orchestra, and the enigmatic exchanges between piano and strings in the middle-movement Andante con moto then give way to a soaring conclusive Rondo.
